Alberta's Mystical Geography - ArticleSnatch.com

Alberta is considered to be one of the Prairie provinces. Alberta's landscape is very diverse, which is ideal for outdoor adventure seekers. You can go from mountain peaks, to glacial lakes, to roaming through the forest, and then frolicking in the prairies. The landscape has also been blessed with an abundance of natural mineral resources like petroleum and natural gas. These natural resources give Alberta's economy massive strength.

The Rocky Mountains:

The Rocky Mountains are one of Western Canada's most beautiful sight, they reach a very high altitude of 9,000 feet to more than 12,000 feet above sea level. Mount Columbia, which is located right at British Columbia's border, is Alberta's highest peak at 12,294 feet above sea level. The weather at the Rocky Mountains can be extremely unpredictable. The weather changes as you increase in altitude. For the most part, the Rocky Mountains have lots of precipitation, cold winters with deep snow and freezing temperatures, and mild summers. There is a diversity of vegetation in the Rocky Mountains, you will find pine trees, spruces, and firs.

The Great Plains:

The Great plains extend from the Western Canadian provinces of Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan, to Wyoming, Texas, South Dakota, North Dakota, New Mexico, Montana, Kansas, and Colorado. The Canadian portion of the Great Plains is referred to as the Prairies. As the name suggests, the area is generally covered mostly by prairies (grasslands), and also by forests. There are three types of prairies: tallgrass prairie, mixed grass prairie, and fescue prairie. In Alberta, the most common type of prairie is the mixed grass prairie.

The Canadian Shield:

The Canadian Shield surrounds the Hudson Bay, and is U-shaped which makes it look like a warrior's shield. The shield used to have jagged peaks that were higher in altitude than any of the mountains, but after centuries of erosion, the mountains changed into rolling hills, which consists of ancient, crystalline rock. It is one of the World's most mineral ore-rich areas, and contains large deposits of gold, nickel, copper, and silver. The Canadian Shield occupies the provinces of: Alberta, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Quebec, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Newfoundland and Labrador (Labrador only).

The Boreal Forest:

The Boreal Forest is a biome that consists of coniferous forests. The majority of the trees that are native to the Boreal Forest are conifers, which have needle leaves and cones, these include: Balsam Fir, pines, Cottonwood, White Spruce, Black Spruce, and larches. The forest is about 1000km wide, separating the tundra in the North, and the temperate rainforests and deciduous woodlands in the West. Canada's Boreal Forest is the largest intact boreal forest in the World, with about three million square kilometres that have not been urbanized. Approximately 80% of Canada's Aboriginal population live in the forested areas. The forest is accessible from various cities in Alberta. You can easily leave your Fort McMurray apartment rental, and take a drive up to the Boreal Forest to discover its beauty.

Analysis: Italy's politics turned upside down by election aftermath

By Barry Moody

ROME (Reuters) - Five months ago, Silvio Berlusconi was in steep decline and his party was in shambles. His center-left enemies looked triumphant and sat on a 15-point opinion poll lead.

Today that situation has turned 180 degrees. The center-left is devastated by divisions and the 76-year-old media tycoon has an opinion poll lead ranging from five to eight points.

The extraordinary upset is the result of powerful aftershocks from an electoral earthquake in February when the populist 5-Star Movement swept up a huge protest vote against Italy's politicians and grabbed an unprecedented 25 percent to become the third force in parliament.

Now that the dust is starting to settle with the inauguration of a new broad-based coalition government led by center-left politician Enrico Letta, it is possible to see more clearly the winners and losers from one of the most turbulent periods in recent Italian political history.

One of the winners is Berlusconi.

He has gone from a pale, indecisive figure last autumn to a position of strong influence over Letta's government, helped greatly by the implosion of the center-left and his own astonishing resurgence since he was forced from power in November 2011 as Italy faced a major financial meltdown.

The four-times former premier's unrivalled political and communication skills, despite the reputational damage from a string of sex and corruption scandals, are in stark contrast to the bungles of hapless center-left leader Pier Luigi Bersani.

Berlusconi had consistently said since the election that a grand coalition was the only way out of a vote that ended with parliament divided three ways and no group able to govern alone.

He was also one of those pushing hardest for the re-election of President Giorgio Napolitano against the 87-year-old head of state's own wishes, as the only way to end a two-month impasse since the election.

Berlusconi's loyal prot?g? Angelino Alfano is Letta's deputy and the billionaire businessman has effective power of life and death over the government, giving him strong leverage to push through the center-right's policies led by abolition of a hated housing tax.

In his inaugural speech on Monday, Letta quickly nodded to this demand by blocking the next installment of the tax in June although he did not commit to abolishing it.

"Berlusconi can kill the government from one day to the next," respected commentator Sergio Romano told Reuters.

This power is not unqualified, however.

Berlusconi has resisted heavy pressure from his own party hardliners to go straight to elections, because doing so with the current flawed electoral law could end up with him in the same situation as the center-left, which won a whisker thin majority in February but was then left unable to rule.

In addition, Berlusconi seems intent on projecting an image of statesmanlike restraint and responsibility.

The electorate is bitterly angry at the economic pain of a deep recession and demands immediate action to relaunch the economy rather than a return to uncertainty and electioneering.

Romano says Berlusconi has also not given up his ambition to be the next Italian president, with Napolitano very unlikely to continue for a full 7-year term.

BERSANI IS BIG LOSER

Undoubtedly the biggest loser is the colorless and uninspiring Democratic Party (PD) leader Bersani, who has resigned after seeing party rebels sabotage his two choices for president.

Bersani had already thrown away a commanding lead before the election and then obstinately pursued a policy of forging an alliance with Grillo, despite repeated rebuffs.

Bersani's problem is at the core of why the center-left is falling apart. Its former communist left wing would not swallow the idea of allying with its traditional enemy Berlusconi and although it is now apparently reconciled to the Letta government, the party could still collapse at any time.

The biggest winner of all is President Napolitano, who has succeeded in fending off further uncertainty in a snap new election and installing the coalition government he wanted as a bulwark against Grillo's anti-establishment party.

"Napolitano has been decisive. If it had not been for him we would now be in a major constitutional crisis," Professor Gianfranco Pasquino of Johns Hopkins University told Reuters.

The former communist, dubbed "King George", has reinforced his status as Italy's most popular politician by far.

The whole formation of the Letta government is down to Napolitano's protection and the assurances he wrung from the parties in exchange for his agreement to stay on as president.

Castigating politicians for their failures in his own inaugural speech a week ago, Napolitano clearly threatened to resign if they did not act responsibly and form a government.

Beppe Grillo's storming success in February's election may have been diluted since, although he remains a danger to the traditional politicians.

A series of missteps during the latest stage of the crisis, including some ill-judged inflammatory statements, may have lost him support and the formation of a credible government by establishment parties looks like a setback for him.

"Grillo is now sliding towards the losing side because he has not really used the parliamentary power he has in a very skilful way ... he is losing popularity. It is not a good moment for him," Pasquino said.

Success by Letta could further undermine Grillo.

Letta, 46, has always operated very much out of the limelight but he is a respected, pro-European politician from the Democratic Party's right wing and his government does appear to meet many of the electorate's demands for change.

He is the third youngest Italian prime minister, and his cabinet line-up has an average age of 53 in contrast to the much older composition of most governments. It also has a record number of 7 women ministers out of 21.

It contains many lesser known faces, meeting voters' demands for the end of dominance by a corrupt political "caste."

If Letta succeeds in maintaining unity in the uncomfortable left-right coalition, pushes through pro-growth policies, repeals the electoral law and makes other vital constitutional changes, he could pick up powerful momentum that would be bad news for Grillo.

"I am convinced Grillo's votes are borrowed votes, protest votes, votes denied to somebody else. If the government does well, if the situation improves, if they change the trend of unemployment and Letta gains popularity, Grillo's votes will melt away," Romano said.

Letta's momentum could also be bad news for Florence mayor Matteo Renzi, 38, who had seemed set to be the center-left's candidate in new elections but faces a far more difficult potential target in Letta than Bersani, as long as the new prime minister survives.

While Renzi remains a potential game changer as a dynamic and articulate politician, he may now have to wait longer before he can move to center-stage although he is still in pole position to take over the PD leadership from Bersani at a vote in the autumn.

Why Doesn't the Real Estate Industry Face the Same Scrutiny as ...

A recent newspaper included a glossy magazine with an article urging me to run out and buy a house ? fast!

?Thanks to historically low interest rates, affordability is at an all-time high,? the article said. ?I highly recommend taking advantage of this opportunity before conditions change ? although interest rates are still hovering just above their lowest rate, they will start to climb. In this climate, it?s absolutely crucial that you?re prepared to move quickly.?

This article was written not by some journalist but by the president and CEO of Douglas Elliman Real Estate, Dottie Herman. Nothing against Herman or her company, but the article, and the lack of scrutiny it received, highlight one of the puzzling aspects of the financial crisis and its aftermath ? bankers were hit with new regulations and called before congressional hearings, but the real estate industry has escaped largely intact.

Herman?s assessment of housing ?affordability? should be taken with a Everest-sized mountain of salt. The New York Times reported back in January of 2009 that the National Association of Realtors had declared ?housing affordability was at an all-time high in December.? That was December of 2008 they were talking about; it?s now 2013, more than four years later, and the real estate industry is telling us again that ?affordability is at an all-time high.?

Similar skepticism should be applied to her predictions about interest rates. Federal Reserve officials reportedly don?t expect to raise them until 2015. Even then there will be strong pressure from Treasury not to raise them much, because doing so would wreck the federal budget by increasing the government?s borrowing costs. If Dottie Herman really knew what?s going to happen to interest rates, you?d think she?d be trading bonds rather than selling real estate.

Her article bases the affordability claim on an example of ?assuming a 30-year fixed mortgage with 10% down.? If these houses she is hawking are as affordable as she claims they are, you?d think the borrowers might be able to scrape together a 20 percent down payment.

There may be some formula by which housing affordability is at an all-time high, but to New Yorkers who have seen the nominal prices of houses and apartments double or triple or more in the past decade or two, this is the sort of claim that will elicit a chuckle, if not a snort or an eyeroll. So is the admonition to ?move quickly.? Most real estate brokers are paid by the deal, not by the hour, so if the buyers rush forward with ?the strongest offer,? as Herman advises, it makes things easier for the brokers. If you are a buyer, though, you may get a better deal by being patient and waiting the seller out.

If this were a oil-company executive talking up his own interests, or a banker, the press or politicians would be tearing his claims apart. But for some reason, the real estate brokers get a pass. Maybe, as others have suggested, it?s because everyone?s mom?s friend seems to be a real estate broker, while Wall Street bankers or derivatives traders seem to be more remote and better paid.

And maybe the double standard is for the best ? the last thing we need, after all, is another American industry hauled before Congress or saddled with unworkable and expensive regulations. It?s not as if the real estate brokers and home builders felt no pain at all; plenty of them had slow years after the financial crisis.

One other possible explanation of why Herman?s claims don?t receive critical scrutiny in the press is that the editors are on her payroll. And by that I mean not that Elliman is a large advertiser, or that it paid to insert the glossy magazine into newspapers, though both those things are true; no ? the editors are literally (paging Joe Biden) on her payroll. The ?contributors? page of Elliman magazine lists both the features director of T, The New York Times Style Magazine, Maura Egan, and the real estate editor at the New York Daily News, Jason Sheftell.

Sheftell told me he holds the ethics of the journalistic profession in the highest esteem, and that his work for Elliman ?is vital to conveying to my readers how these firms ? big and small ? operate.? By this logic, political editors should do paid freelance work on the side for candidates, or for magazines run by political parties.

Sheftell declined to say how much he was paid by the real estate company. But given how affordable housing prices are these days, who knows ? it may just be enough to help make that down payment, so long as he?s ?prepared to move quickly.?

Dubai court jails Britons for four years on drug charges

By Mahmoud Habboush

DUBAI (Reuters) - A Dubai court sentenced three Britons to four years in jail on drug charges on Monday, a decision that may overshadow a visit to Britain by the United Arab Emirates president because of allegations that the defendants were tortured.

The three were convicted a day after British Prime Minister David Cameron voiced concern about the allegations and his spokesman said the case would be on the agenda of his talks this week with UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahayan.

Grant Cameron, Karl Williams and Suneet Jeerh, all in their 20s, were arrested in July 2012 during a holiday in the UAE. Police said they had found a form of synthetic cannabis in their hire car.

All three had pleaded not guilty to charges of possessing and intending to sell illegal drugs and said police had subjected them to beatings and threatened them with guns - allegations the police deny.

UAE Judge Ali Attiyah Saad found the three guilty in Dubai Criminal Court and sentenced them to four years in jail each.

Defence lawyer Issa bin-Haider said the sentences indicated the court had dropped the charge of intent to sell illegal drugs, which would have carried a more severe punishment.

Abdel-Hamid Mahdi, who represents Grant Cameron, said he planned to appeal against the sentence, asking for clemency. It is common for convicts to be pardoned during UAE national and religious holidays, particularly first-time offenders.

In London, David Cameron's spokesman said the case of the three Britons would feature in his discussions with Sheikh Khalifa, who was to arrive for a state visit on Tuesday.

"We have asked for a full and impartial independent investigation into these incidents," the spokesman told reporters. "The state visit is primarily a chance to develop and strengthen relations between our two countries. As part of that there will be opportunities to raise a wide range of issues, including concerns about these cases," he added.

In a letter to Reprieve, a London-based legal charity which campaigns for prisoner rights, Cameron said on Sunday that Britain had repeatedly raised concerns about the torture allegations with the UAE, saying the authorities' failure to organise a full medical examination of the men was worrisome.

"We continue to press for evidence of a full, impartial and independent investigation," Cameron wrote.

At a hearing in the case in March, police officer Osman Ali Abdulla, who took part in the Britons' arrests, denied any of the men were abused or beaten and said they were treated well.

There is zero tolerance for drug-related offences in the UAE, a regional business hub and tourist destination where millions of expatriates live and work. There are severe penalties for drug trafficking and possession.

Reprieve investigator Kate Higham urged Cameron on Monday to push for their release during his talks with Sheikh Khalifa.

"The central fact of this case remains that these men were tortured by police, but there has been no proper investigation into their abuse," she said in a statement.

During his two-day visit to Britain, the UAE leader will be hosted by the Queen at Windsor Castle, hold a meeting with Cameron and have tea with the Prince of Wales. He will be accompanied by a high-level government delegation.

Canon imageFormula P-208 Scan-tini Personal Document Scanner

As its name implies, the Canon imageFormula P-208 Scan-tini Personal Document Scanner has a strong family resemblance to the Editors' Choice Canon imageFormula P-215 Scan-tini Personal Document Scanner. As the lower price suggests, it's a step down in Canon's line. The big difference in hardware is a somewhat slower speed and a 10-sheet, rather than 20-sheet, automatic document feeder (ADF). What keeps it from also being an Editors' Choice is its limited software. If you already have the programs you need, or are willing to buy them separately, however, it can still be a good choice.

At 1.5 by 12.3 by 2.2 inches, and only 1 pound 5 ounces, the P-208 is a touch smaller and about a pound lighter than either the P-215 or the Editor's Choice Canon imageFormula P-150 Scan-tini. Like both of them, however, it offers not just an ADF but duplexing (the ability to scan both sides of a page simultaneously) also.

One key difference between the P-208 on the one hand and the P-150 and P-215 on the other is speed. Canon rates both of those scanners at 15 pages per minute (ppm) for simplex (one-sided) scans in both grayscale and black and white modes, and at 30 images per minute (ipm) for duplex mode (with one image on each side of the page). For color mode, the ratings drop to 10 ppm and 20 ipm. The rating for the P-208, in contrast, is 8 ppm and 16 ipm in all three color modes. (At this writing, the Web site gives a faster speed for black and white mode, but Canon says that was a typo that should be fixed by the time you read this.)

One plus the P-208 shares with the P-215 (but is missing from the P-150) is the ability to scan hard plastic cards, like embossed ID cards and driver licenses. So as far as the scanner itself is concerned, the P-208 is basically a slightly less capable, but also less expensive, alternative to the P-215.

Setup and Software
As with the P-215, the P-208 offers easy setup. In fact, because the scanner gets power over a USB connection, and because it includes Canon's CaptureOnTouch Lite scan utility in on-board memory, setup can be as easy as plugging in the supplied USB cable and letting your computer run the utility.

Running the Lite version of the program from the scanner memory can obviously be convenient if you want to scan to a computer you don't use regularly. In most cases, however, it makes more sense to install the full version on your computer. The most notable additional features are the ability to store scan profiles and the ability to scan to specific destinations other than a file, including to your printer, to email, or to an application program.

Installing programs from the included disc on your computer also lets you install a combination Twain and ISIS driver, which will let you scan directly from most Windows programs; NewSoft Presto! BizCard 6 SE for scanning and managing business cards; and connectors for Evernote, Google Docs, and Microsoft Sharepoint.

The software installation is fairly typical, except that it suffers from the same issue I saw with the P-215 and the Canon imageFormula DR-C125. During installation, you need to choose between a Typical or Custom install. With most scanners, the Typical option would install everything. With the P-208, however, it doesn't.

As I've pointed out in other reviews, Canon should provide some additional information on screen during installation explaining what each choice installs. Without it you may well choose the Typical option and never know that there are other programs available or how to install them.

In any case, for my tests I installed all the software on a system running Windows Vista. For most of the tests I used the full version of CaptureOnTouch, which can scan to a searchable PDF file as well as to image PDF, JPG, BMP, and PPTX formats. In addition I used BizCard for testing business card scanning.

Performance
As with most document scanners, the P-208 offers a 600 pixel per inch (ppi) optical resolution, which is much more than you need for document scanning. Its 200 ppi default setting is also typical, since it's a high enough resolution for most text documents.

The P-208 did a good job on our document management tests. Using the default settings of 200 ppi and color mode, I timed it for scanning and saving the file in image PDF format at an effective 9.7 ppm, significantly faster than the 8 ppm rating. In duplex mode, it was only slightly slower, at 9.0 ppm and 18 ipm. These are not only blazingly fast speeds for a portable scanner, they're faster than the speeds I saw with the P-215, at 6.3 ppm and 12.6 ipm.

Even more impressive is that the P-208 doesn't slow down significantly when you scan to a searchable PDF file. A number of Canon scanners, including the P-215, can make the same claim, but most scanners can't. The Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300, for example, took 1 minute 43 seconds to scan 10 pages and save to an image file on our tests, but 2:37 to scan, recognize the text, and save the file. The P-208 took a total of 1:07 for scanning and saving to a PDF image file, and a total 1:13 for scanning and saving the same document to a searchable PDF file.

The results for business cards were mixed. The scanner had no trouble feeding a stack of seven cards at a time, so it could scan them all with a single scan command, and the speed was acceptably fast. However, the accuracy was poor, with three or more errors in name, company name, and phone numbers on just under half of the cards, and one or two on most of the rest. Depending on how good a typist you are, you might or might not consider this an improvement on entering the information by hand.

The one serious issue I ran into with the P-208 is that I couldn't test it for scanning to editable text format. Canon doesn't include a program than can handle the task. This seems like an odd oversight, since the scan utility offers optical character recognition (OCR) for scanning to a searchable PDF file. However there's no way to use the OCR to scan to a text file.

The inability to scan to editable text format makes it hard to give the Canon imageFormula P-208 Scan-tini Personal Document Scanner an unqualified recommendation. The scanner itself is impressive, thanks to its fast speed, ADF, and duplexing. And even the scan utility is capable as far as it goes. But it doesn't go far enough. If you don't need to scan to editable text format, or already have software for that task, this won't be an issue. If you have to buy a program, however, you may actually save money buying a more expensive scanner, like Canon's own P-215, that already includes the software you need.

92% Jurassic Park: An IMAX 3D Experience

All Critics (96) | Top Critics (24) | Fresh (97) | Rotten (8) | DVD (39)

The enthralling man-vs.-nature parable based on the late Michael Crichton's best-selling novel hasn't aged one bit.

The 3-D process adds not just dimension but depth - a technological extension of cinematographer Gregg Toland's deep-focus innovations in The Grapes of Wrath and Citizen Kane. The change in perspective creates greater intensity.

I'm a fan of this movie. It is thrilling, and the 3-D treatment is a nice enhancement.

This movie doesn't just stand the test of time, it transcends it.

"Jurassic Park" remains an absolute thrill from a Spielberg in top form: Funny, scary, fast-moving and full of just-right details.

"Jurassic Park" was impressive in 1993. Twenty years later, it's flawless.

A classic gets even better.

Steven Spielbeg's 1993 tale of an island plagued dinosaurs running amok holds up surprisingly well in the special effects category.

The film is a classic and the chance to see it on the big screen again (or for the first time) should not be missed

Sentiment is explained by science as the family impulse that motivates so many Steven Spielberg stories is revealed to be an evolutionary imperative in this near-perfect action-adventure.

[Looks] better not only than effects-driven movies of the same period, but better, frankly, than half of what gets released nowadays.

Kids who love dinosaurs will love it. And who doesn't?

confirms both Spielberg's mastery of cinematic thrills and the comparatively empty bombast of today's summer tentpole movies, even the better ones.

Jurassic Park shows us a director in transition, and the film captures his transformation in its own kind of cinematic amber.

[The] 3D [conversion] provides the definitive version of this classic film. Jurassic Park has been transformed with with artistry, nuance and sophistication, and it's an absolute must-see during this brief run.

The 3D effects had me nearly jumping out of my seat. Some say Hollywood is converting too many old films to 3D. But, "Jurassic Park" was the perfect choice. There's nothing more fun than sharing a seat with a snapping dinosaur.

Spielberg treats us as he does his characters, leading us into a strange land and expecting us to make it out with all our faculties intact; it's a tall order, given the heart-stopping, bloodcurdling, limbs-numbing excitement packed into the second hour.

It is as if time has passed the movie by. "Jurassic Park" remains solid entertainment, but the awe and wonder have faded.

The thrill of seeing live dinosaurs on screen is not as acute today as it was 20 years ago admittedly, but there is still some 3D awe left in the creations that roared 65 billion years ago...

The 3D isn't pushed on the audience, but it does reveal the amount of depth that Spielberg actually put into the film 20 years ago.

While it's not the most profound of Spielberg's works or the most entertaining from a popcorn perspective, it's one of the most technically flawless movies he's ever produced.

Jurassic Park 3D is like being reunited with an old friend; an old friend that wants to eat you and maul you to death, but still. A classic is reborn in glorious IMAX with a vibrantly stunning use of 3D.

If releasing the film in 3-D is the only way to get it back in theaters, then the gimmick is an acceptable addition. The 3-D is good. But when a movie is this near flawless, nothing is needed to make it better.

The 3D conversion ruins everything, like the comet that killed the dinosaurs, making Jurassic Park the rare amusement I'd prefer to revisit at home.

A beast of a movie is gifted a superfluous-but-superb rouging of the cheeks, offering fanatics something new to study while newcomers will be ruined for any future television airings.

Will Chael Sonnen hang it up for good after UFC 159 loss to Jon Jones?

Minutes after losing by TKO to UFC light heavyweight Jon Jones, Chael Sonnen indicated his fighting days may be over.

"I'm not going to be one of the guys to hang around. If there's not a road to the title, then this sport isn't for me. I believe that was probably my last opportunity," Sonnen said to UFC commentator Joe Rogan.

He didn't specifically say "I'm retiring," but he did talk about the end of the road. This seems like more than the emotional ramblings of a fighter after a bad loss. B.J. Penn threatened retirement several times before it stuck. Nick Diaz has retired and unretired plenty of times.

Retirement wouldn't be out of the question. He's 36 years old and has fought in 40 fights after a long career as an amateur and collegiate wrestler.

If he does decide to retire, don't expect him to play shuffleboard and take up gardening. He already works as a commentator for Fox's broadcasts. During the last season of "The Ultimate Fighter," he proved to be a capable coach. Retirement would not mean Sonnen was done with MMA.

Sonnen talked his way into a title shot with Jones just months after he dropped a title shot to Anderson Silva at middleweight. Deserved or not, Sonnen has had several chances to win the UFC belt, and he hasn't won any of them. Not many fighters get more chances than he has. If the belt is the only thing that's important, why not retire?

Google Now hits iOS, still better on Android, though

Google Now

Android version is more fluid, and is still the best Google Now experience

There's a little excitement this morning in the iOS camp as the Google Search app has been updated, brining Google Now cards to the fray. You get the same information you get on Android, with the same card design -- but  it's a vastly different experience.

On Android, you simply open Google Now, and everything's there. Sports scores. Weather. Directions. Birthdays. Whatever. It takes a couple more steps on iOS. They're well-animated steps, but it takes the "Wow!" factor out of the entire operation. You're going to get the information instead of it being right there, almost before you knew you needed it.

So, yeah. Google Now's now on iOS. But it's defnitely still better on Android.

Hungary's rawest nerve: Learning to love the Roma | Politics.hu

Only the most violent extremists actually spell it out, but somewhere in the debate in Hungary lurks the ugly sentence, ??They kill us so we kill them.?

Tit for tat ? the recipe for ethnic war.

But their own experience can help Hungarians understand the difference between ordinary crime and hate crime ? like when people in Romania or Slovakia or Serbia, are attacked just because they speak Hungarian in the street.

Pyongyang glitters but most of NKorea still dark

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) ? The heart of this city, once famous for its Dickensian darkness, now pulsates with neon.

Glossy new construction downtown has altered the Pyongyang skyline. Inside supermarkets where shopgirls wear faux French designer labels, people with money can buy Italian wine, Swiss chocolates, kiwifruit imported from New Zealand and fresh-baked croissants. They can get facials, lie in tanning booths, play a round of mini golf or sip cappuccinos.

Nearly 2 million people are using cell phones. Computer shops can't keep up with demand for North Korea's locally distributed tablet computer, popularly known here as "iPads." A shiny new cancer institute features a $900,000 X-ray machine imported from Europe.

Pyongyang has long been a city apart from the rest of North Korea, the showcase capital dubbed a "socialist fairyland" by state media.

But a year after new leader Kim Jong Un promised publicly to bring an end to the "era of belt-tightening" and economic hardship in North Korea, the gap between the haves and have-nots so far has only grown with Pyongyang's transformation.

Beyond the paved main streets of the capital, life remains grindingly tough. Food is rationed, electricity is a precious commodity and people get around by walking, cycling or hopping into the backs of trucks. Most homes lack running water or plumbing. Health care is free, but aid workers say medicine is in short supply.

___

For decades, North Korea seemed a country trapped in time. Rickety streetcars shuddered past concrete-block apartment buildings with broken window panes, chipping pastel paint and crumbling front steps.

But since 2010, as part of the campaign to build a new city for their new leader, Pyongyang has been under construction. Scaffolding covers the fronts of scores of buildings across the city. Red banners painted with slogan "At a breath" ? implying breakneck work at a breathless pace ? flutter from the skeletons of skyscrapers built by soldiers.

Often, the soldiers are scrawny conscripts in thin canvas sneakers piling bricks onto stretchers or hauling them by hand. In 2011, they set up temporary work camps along the Taedong River, makeshift shantytowns decorated by red flags.

Their work focused on downtown Changjon Street, where ramshackle cottages were torn down to make way for department stores, restaurants and high-rise apartments.

Today, the street would not look out of place in Seoul or Shanghai. Indeed, many of the goods ? Hershey's Kisses, Coca-Cola and Doritos ? on sale at the new supermarket were imported from China and Singapore.

"What is a 'delicatessen'?" a North Korean asked as a butcher in a white chef's hat sliced tuna for takeaway sashimi beneath a deli sign written in English. Upstairs, baristas were serving Italian espressos, bakers were churning out baguettes and white wedding cakes.

___

One new Changjon Street resident, Mun Kang Sun, gave The Associated Press a tour of the apartment she and her husband were granted in recognition for her work at the Kim Jong Suk Textile Factory.

A framed wedding portrait hangs on the wall above their Western-style bed. There's a washing machine in the bathroom, an IBM computer in the study and a 42-inch widescreen TV. AP was not allowed to visit other apartments to compare whether the furnishings are typical for Pyongyang residents.

Orphaned as a child, Mun said she began working in factories at age 16. She earned the title "hero of the republic" after exceeding her work quota by 200 percent for 13 years. She says she accomplished that by dashing around the factory floor operating four or five machines at once.

"When we heard the news that we'd get a nest where we can rest, and we got the key for our apartment and took a look around, we were totally shocked because the house is so nice," said her husband, Kim Hyok. "It's still hard to believe this is my home; it still feels like we're living in a hotel."

Though the apartment has faucets, old habits die hard. The bathtub was still filled with water, a bucket bobbing in the tub, as in countless homes across the country where water is pumped from a well, carried in by hand and used sparingly.

___

Elsewhere in the city, aging buildings are getting upgraded. But most are still drafty, the walls poorly insulated, even in the capital. Elevators and heat are rare. North Koreans are accustomed to wearing winter jackets and thermal underwear indoors from October to April.

Power cuts have been less frequent in Pyongyang since the opening of a hydroelectric power station to the northwest, but it's still common for the lights to go out in the middle of dinner. Most people just carry on drinking and eating.

Outside Pyongyang, nightfall comes early. In Ryonggang, west of the capital, lights were out as soon as the sun set. At one inn, two women stood chatting quietly in a lobby lit with a candle as a shrill voice from a radio broadcast chortled from loudspeakers nearby.

Kim Jong Jin's farm cottage in Hamhung has a generator, allowing him and his wife to watch DVDs at night on a TV they carefully cover during the day with a frilly lace veil.

Their thimble of a home is simple but spotless, the papered floors clean enough to eat from. Water is piped into a well in the kitchen. Heat comes from the traditional Korean "ondol" system of feeding an underground furnace with wood. Waste is turned into methane gas for cooking. Food for the household comes from the garden outside.

But not everyone lives in such relative comfort as the Kims, whose home government officials are willing to show off. There are stark signs of poverty across the country. A mother huddles over a child as she sits shivering by the side of the road. Barefoot boys in a village destroyed by floods scamper about dressed in little more than underwear. Sharp shoulders and splotchy faces betray the gnawing hunger of young soldiers.

Beyond the paved, pocked highways that radiate from Pyongyang, there are few roads between the denuded mountains, just dirt paths that become dangerously muddy with rainfall and treacherously slippery in winter. Villagers struggle to clear snow with makeshift shovels crafted out of planks of wood.

Private cars are a rarity outside the capital, and gasoline is scarce. In Hamhung, North Korea's second-largest city, soldiers cram into the backs of trucks powered by wood-burning stoves that send smoke billowing behind them.

Goods are strapped to the back of bicycles, from firewood to dead pigs. Old men sit crouched by the side of the road with bike pumps, offering to fix flats. Oxen, and people, plod past pulling carts.

The closest most may get to the capital in their lifetime is by seeing it on state TV. For them, Pyongyang would truly seem like a fairyland.

___

Life in the North Korean countryside would be familiar to South Koreans old enough to recall the poverty in their nation just after the Korean War. Indeed, into the 1970s, North Korea was the richer of the two Koreas.

Today, newly affluent South Korea has the world's 15th-largest economy. In North Korea, meanwhile, two-thirds of people struggle to find their daily meal, according to the World Food Program.

North Koreans acknowledge the devastating economic loss of the Soviet safety net in the early 1990s. But they blame the county's growing international isolation on the U.S., its Korean War foe, which has led efforts to punish North Korea for developing its nuclear weapons program.

Pyongyang instead has turned to fledgling trade with companies in China, Singapore, Indonesia, Italy, Egypt and elsewhere. These joint ventures keep the shelves in the capital stocked with goods, computer labs filled with PCs, streets crowded with VWs, in spite of sanctions.

For years, foreign goods and customs were regarded with practiced suspicion, even as they were secretly coveted. Kim Jong Un has addressed that curiosity by encouraging trade and by quoting his father in saying North Korea is "looking out onto the world" ? a country that must become familiar with international customs even if it continues to prefer its own.

Kim has not made it significantly easier for North Koreans to travel, channel surf or read travelogues posted online, but he is arranging to bring the Eiffel Tower and Big Ben to them in the form of a miniature world park slated to open later this year.

The flow of cash and goods has created a burgeoning middle class in the capital. Pyongyang now has a parade of fashionistas in eye-popping belted jackets, sparkly barrettes clipped to their hair, fingernails painted with a clear gloss. At one European-style restaurant last week, a young couple on a date sipped cocktails topped off with Maraschino cherries and feasted on pizza, their cellphones laid on the table.

At one beauty salon, the rage is for short cuts made popular by singers from the all-girl military Moranbong band who have jazzed up North Korea's staid performance scene with their bobbed hair, little black dresses and electric guitars.

"There are so many young women asking to get their hair done like them," hairstylist Chae Cho Yong said.

___

While the differences between the showcase capital and the hardscrabble countryside are growing starker, one thing remains the same: the authoritarian rule and the intricate web of laws governing life in the Stalinist state.

Even as they laugh, North Koreans calibrate their words. Criticism of the state and leadership is not only taboo but dangerous; when asked for their opinion, most people parrot phrases they've heard in state media, still the safest way to answer questions in a country where state security remains tight and terrifying.

Very few have access to the Internet, cable TV, international phone lines. It's still illegal for them to interact without permission with foreigners, who are kept on a tight leash and discouraged from making impromptu visits to homes, shops, restaurants and offices.

Around Chae, the cavernous barber shop was empty, not a single customer in the brand new swivel seats.

An employee explained that most North Koreans are at weekly ideology study sessions on Saturdays, the only day of the week foreigners are allowed inside.

Unknown Huawei P6-U06 smartphone shows off 6.2mm profile in Chinese certification

The FCC isn't the only agency playing with devices we don't even know exist, and its Chinese equivalent has recently had some hands-on time with an unknown Huawei smartphone, codename P6-U06. Luckily, there are a few pics and specs to accompany the filing, which tell us it weighs 120g (4.2 ounces) and measures 132.6 x 65.5 x 6.18mm (5.2 x 2.6 x 0.2 inch), meaning it could be one of the super-slim P series handsets a Huawei exec hinted at CES. We didn't see any evidence of these at MWC, but the same exec promised more was to come in 2013, possibly starting with this P6-U06.

Those dimensions house a 4.7-inch TFT screen at 720p resolution, quad-core 1.5GHz processor, 2GB RAM, an 8-megapixel camera on the back and an unusually large 5-megapixel sensor in the shooter up front. Unsurprisingly, Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean is listed as the OS, while dual-SIM support and GSM / WCDMA radios suggest Asia as the target market (not to mention the Chinese certification). That's all we've got on the P6-U06 for now, but in lieu of official press shots, the handset strikes a couple more candid poses after the break.

(AP) ? An unemployed bricklayer shot two Italian policemen in a crowded square outside the premier's office Sunday just as the nation's new government was being sworn in, investigators said.

The gunman's intended target was politicians, a top Italian official said after interviewing him.

Mired in recession and suffering from soaring unemployment, Italy has been in political paralysis since an inconclusive February election. Social and political tensions have been running high among voters divided between center-left, conservative and anti-government political parties.

Sunday was supposed to be a hopeful day when debt-ridden Italy finally got new government to solve its many problems. But shots rang out in Colonna Square near a busy shopping and strolling area shortly after 11:30 a.m. just as Premier Enrico Letta and his new ministers were taking their oaths at the Quirinal presidential office about a kilometer (half mile) away.

The suspected gunman, dressed in a dark business suit, was immediately grabbed by other police outside Chigi Palace, which houses the premier's office and other government offices. The politicians were supposed to have met at the palace later Sunday for their first Cabinet meeting.

Rome Prosecutor Pierfilippo Laviani told reporters he had questioned the alleged assailant, who was taken to a hospital with bruises after being wrestled to the ground. He identified the man as Luigi Preiti, 49, from Calabria, a southern agricultural area plagued by organized crime and chronic unemployment.

Laviani said Preiti had "confessed everything" and didn't appear mentally unbalanced.

"He is a man full of problems, who lost his job, who lost everything," the prosecutor said. "He was desperate. In general, he wanted to shoot at politicians, but given that he couldn't reach any, he shot at the Carabinieri" paramilitary police.

One of the policemen, shot in the neck, was in critical condition. The other, shot in the leg, suffered a fracture, doctors said.

The shooting "was the tragic gesture of a 49-year-old unemployed man," Interior Minister Angelino Alfano told reporters after briefing Letta and his new Cabinet.

A woman passing by during the shooting was slightly injured, Rome's mayor said. It was unclear if she was grazed by a bullet or hurt in the panic sparked by the gunfire.

The 46-year-old Letta had nailed down a coalition deal only a day ago between two bitter political enemies ? his center-left forces and the conservative bloc of ex-Premier Silvio Berlusconi. Letta will speak to Parliament on Monday, laying out his strategy to reduce joblessness while still sticking to the austerity measures needed to keep the eurozone's No. 3 economy from descending into a sovereign debt crisis. He will then face confidence votes.

A video surveillance camera on the Parliament building caught the attacker on film just before and during the shooting, Italian news reports said.

The attacker was walking at a steady pace along a narrow street that leads from the square outside Parliament's lower house to the square outside the premier's office, when police officers appear to have stopped him to ask where he was going.

About 90 minutes later, Letta and his ministers were due to enter Chigi Palace. It was not immediately known if the attacker knew about their arrival.

Shortly after police approached him, he began firing, according to the surveillance camera.

An AP television producer saw the two wounded Carabinieri officers in the square outside the palace. One of them lay on the pavement with blood pouring out of his neck.

Alfano said the alleged gunman wanted to kill himself after the shooting but ran out of bullets. He said six shots were fired in all. The gunman used a semi-automatic pistol whose serial number had been scraped off, Sky TG24 TV said.

The interior minister said security was immediately stepped up near key venues in the Italian capital, but added authorities were not worried about possible related attacks.

"Our initial investigation indicates the incident is due to an isolated gesture, although further investigations are being carried out," he said.

Doctors at Rome's Umberto I Polyclinic said a 50-year-old brigadier had been hit in the neck by a bullet that damaged his spinal column and was lodged near his shoulder. The doctors said it wasn't yet known if the spinal column injury had caused any paralysis.

The head of St. John's Hospital, Gianluigi Bracciale, told Sky TG24 TV the second officer suffered a broken leg from a gunshot. He said Prieti didn't appear to have any injuries other than bruises.

Preiti's uncle, interviewed by Sky, said the alleged gunman had moved back to his parents' home in Calabria because he could no longer find work as a bricklayer. "He was a great worker. He could build a house from top to bottom," said the uncle, Domenco Preiti.

The shooting sparked ugly memories of the 1970s and 1980s in Italy, when domestic terrorism plagued the country during a time of high political tensions between right-wing and left-wing blocs.

The new Cabinet ministers were seen smiling in a group photo as news of the shooting broke.

"The news arrived after the swearing-in," said Dario Franceschini, one of the new ministers.

The ministers were kept briefly inside for security reasons until it was clear there was no immediate danger.

Rome was jammed Sunday with tourists and residents enjoying a warm sunny morning on the last day of a four-day weekend.
