Video: Afghan insider attacks: US troops armed and ready

>>> and continuing on that thought, to a person, u.s. commanders i've spoken to over the past week are bullish on the prospects of turning this war over to afghan security forces . there's no question they are making visible progress on a lot of fronts but attacks like today remind us how delicate the process and u.s. policy are. setting out on the road, the physical and spiritual heart of the taliban is a journey often fraught with uncertainty. these soldiers jammed inside a striker combat vehicle know the taliban still fights hard for this land and regularly planned ieds along the way. you've lost some guys to ieds?

>> absolutely. we've had a number of guys wounded and a number of guys killed both mounted and dismounted.

>> lately, however, the americans don't make the journey alone. afghan troops and police man checkpoints along the way. lieutenant general james terry, the operational commander of the war, brought us here to see for ourselves the robust presence of their afghan partners.

>> you look at these afghan national security forces, here is what's very different, very different from two years ago, moving out and taking charge of this.

>> training the afghans to take over the war is practically the singular focus of the international coalition as of 2014 withdrawal date draws closer.

>> and as they become increasingly more capable, we'll skill up some of that advice and assist and then over time they have the lead completely. we're not kicking the crutches out from underneath them.

>> over here is the mosque where omar in 1994 established the taliban and now today u.s. and afghan troops patrolling this village with relative impunity. but there is an undeniable tension that now looms over joint operations like these. that's because of the insider attacks in which members of afghan security forces have turned their guns on their american and other coalition partners.

>> it does shake the confidence of the soldiers out there. a lot of this hard fighting that you've seen down here is shared hardship with the afghan national security forces.

>> worried about undoing the results of those shared hardships, the afghans are now taking steps to better vet their people. are you worried about trust between the u.s. and afghan forces being destroyed?

>> we trust them and they trust us . it is no different. but the act is an individual act and something that happened.

>> you're not fearful the taliban have infiltrated the afghan army ?

>> they have tried to. we filter 0 our people, also.

>> u.s. and afghan commanders agree they cannot afford to disrupt the pace of joint operations , the ability to stand together on the spiritual doorstep of a taliban makes a powerful military and psychological statement for both armies. and for sergeant chad sparks who chose to re-enlist at this very spot, a reminder of why he and his fellow american soldiers are still in the fight.

>> this ought to be a great place to enlist and show that i had a lot of honor for why we're here be a what we're doing here.

Minneapolis police probe shooting rampage that killed 5

MINNEAPOLIS (Reuters) - Minneapolis police on Friday sorted through evidence from a shooting rampage that left at least five people dead, including the founder of a sign company, a UPS driver and the man who opened fire at the business.

The suspected gunman in the Thursday shooting had once worked at Accent Signage Systems Inc and police were not searching for other suspects in the attack, the worst work-place homicide death toll in Minnesota in at least two decades.

Police have not officially released a motive for the attack but were treating it as a work-place shooting.

The suspected gunman apparently died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

Company founder Reuven Rahamim was among the dead, company spokeswoman Wendy Khabie said on Friday.

UPS driver Keith Basinski also was killed in the shooting, said Jill Schubert, president of UPS's Northern Plains District. A UPS truck was parked at the company's loading dock.

"Keith had been a part of our UPS family for 29 years and we are going to miss him very much," Schubert said on Friday in a statement.

Three men were taken to Hennepin County Medical Center in critical condition after the shooting, which was reported at 4:35 p.m. CDT (5.35 p.m. EDT) on Thursday.

A hospital spokeswoman said one man remained in critical condition and a second was in serious condition. The status of the third man, who had been listed in critical condition, was not known.

A fourth person was treated and released.

Accent Signage is the only manufacturing business located among the mix of single-family homes and parks in that tree-lined section of the Bryn Mawr neighborhood of Minneapolis.

"In a great neighborhood and a great business, we have a horrible tragedy," Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak said on Thursday night.

Accent Signage is known for a process of making interior signs with durable Braille text lettering. The company website includes a picture of a White House Counsel office sign plate that uses the Braille technology.

Rahamim, an Israeli immigrant, started a sign business out of his basement that grew to have 28 employees and an expected revenue of $5 million to $10 million this year, according to the publication Finance & Commerce.

"Reuven was so proud of everything that he and his family have built in this country, and he had a right to be," Rybak said Friday in a Facebook posting.

The Minneapolis shooting comes a month after a work-related shooting near the Empire State Building in New York, which killed two people and wounded nine.

This followed an July mass shooting in a crowded cinema in Colorado and an attack on a Sikh temple in Wisconsin in August, which rekindled debate about gun control in the United States.

Minnesota work-place homicide records date back only to 1992 and no one incident had resulted in more than two homicides.

Nationally, there were 458 workplace homicides in 2011 and 518 in 2010, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

Prepare homes for the demands of winter - The Tahlequah Daily Press

TAHLEQUAH ? As the remnants of summer linger, providing warm and sunny weather, it may seem hard to consider a fall home maintenance plan. With the first day of autumn in the rearview mirror, however, chilly temperatures and freezing precipitation are just around the bend.

Preparing the home to stand up to the harsh elements of winter is essential, and fixing potential issues ahead of time will save money and headaches.

?The first thing that they?ll need to do is check and replace air filters for HVAC units, particularly when they?re about to turn the heat on and so forth,? said Tahlequah Lumber Store Manager Bill Kissinger. ?It?s a good time to check the flue pipes on wood stoves, and make sure birds haven?t put any nests in the top of the cap.?

Of course, maintaining sources of heat isn?t enough. Home owners will also want to keep the cold air out.

?You need to check your weather stripping around the doors to make sure you don?t have any wind going through the cracks, or heat escaping,? said Kissinger. ?Sometimes there is some insulation or weather stripping that will fit across the bottom of the door. People might also look into expanding foam for severe drafts around windows and doors, but that?s an extreme situation.?

Kissinger also recommends setting a consistent air temperature within the home.

?Set your thermostats and try to leave them the same all of the time,? he said. ?Some people like to get a programmable thermostat that will automatically maintain heat within the house. That way your heater won?t overwork and you?ll save energy. We?re all about saving energy.?

Clogged gutters and loose roof tiles can also cause problems around the home. Colorful autumn trees are beautiful, but falling foliage prevents proper drainage, and incessant build up on roofs can destroy tiles, leading to major leaks. A full home inspection will cover all bases and, while fairly costly ? between $240-$400 ? will prevent an even more expensive problem.

Of course, heating the home is the most obvious necessity of winter, and there are several elements to ensuring efficiency and safety.

?I would recommend that people have their gas furnaces checked because of carbon monoxide,? said Adams Heating and Air Owner Ron Adams. ?Also, they may get themselves a carbon monoxide detector. A lot of home improvement stores sell those. Of course, every one needs to keep their filter clean, as well. Make sure it is checked by a professional to see that you don?t have kind of fumes getting into the house.?

According to Adams, saving on the utility bill often comes down to common sense.

?The cooler you keep it in your house, the more you?ll save on your utility bill,? he said. ?That?s a common sense thing there. The warmer you keep it, the more it?ll cost.?

While carbon dioxide exhaust is a concern related to the furnace, it doesn?t stop there.

?You want to make sure that the heat exchanger isn?t cracked and the heater is clean on the inside,? said Kinsey?s Heat Air Conditioning and Plumbing Owner Wayne Kinsey.

?That way, it doesn?t stop up any of the burners, because a lot of the older units start flaking rust. You want to make sure that everything is functioning properly so that you don?t emit carbon dioxide. It generally takes less than an hour to have this done.?

Kinsey said that the majority of programmable thermostats are battery powered, requiring owners to be cognizant of remaining battery life.

?You?ll want to keep an eye on your thermostat,? he said. ?All of the new thermostats that we have now are programmable stats that have batteries in them. If the batteries die on you, it will actually keep the unit from kicking on. Anyone can change a thermostat battery. There?s an access door right there on the front of them.?

Finally, as the aphorism goes, pressure busts pipes ? a problem that no one wants to encounter during the dead of winter.

Several precautions can prevent just such a scenario.

Honolulu Community College, Kapi?olani Community College, Leeward Community Coll...

Honolulu Community College, Kapi?olani Community College, Leeward Community College and the University of Hawai?i?West O?ahu have been named to the 2013 Military Friendly Schools list by Victory Media, the premier media entity for military personnel transitioning into civilian life.

The annual list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools in the country that are doing the most to embrace America?s military service members, veterans, and spouses as students and ensure their success on campus.

?It is a great honor to be recognized as a Military Friendly School,? said Honolulu Community College Chancellor Erika Lacro. ?Honolulu Community College has a long history of supporting our military service men and women. We offer courses at Hickam Air Force Base and Pearl Harbor Naval Station through our off-campus program with the hopes of helping military personnel and their spouses achieve their educational aspirations.?

Honolulu CC also hosts the Mobile Vet Center every second Wednesday of the month on campus. The program offers readjustment counseling for veterans returning from service, as well as information on benefits and support services for service members and their families.

Leeward Community College has hired a full-time veteran?s coordinator and has dramatically increased its military and veteran services over the last year. A ?First Friday? event, held on the first Friday of each month, brings together faculty, support staff, and military and veteran students for networking and support.

?It is an honor to be recognized for our efforts in serving military, military dependent and veteran students,? said Leeward Community College Chancellor Manny Cabral. ?Leeward is located within easy commuting distance to all major military bases on O?ahu. We have a long and proud tradition of meeting the need of our military community.?

Read the UH News story or watch the video below highlighting Leeward Community College?s military and veteran services.
2013 Military Friendly Schools

Now in its fourth year, the 2013 list of Military Friendly Schools was compiled through extensive research and a data-driven survey of more than 12,000 VA-approved schools nationwide. Each year, schools taking the survey are held to a higher standard than the previous year via improved methodology, criteria and weightings developed with the assistance of an academic advisory board consisting of educators from schools across the country.

The 1,739 colleges, universities and trade schools on this year?s list are recognized for exhibiting leading practices in the recruitment and retention of students with military experience. These schools have world-class programs and policies for student support on campus, academic accreditation, credit policies, flexibility, and other services to those who served.

The full list, interactive tools and search functionality to help military students find the best school to suit their unique needs and preferences are available on the Military Friendly Schools website.

Goldman sees China's growth slowing to 7 pct for next decade

SINGAPORE, Sept 28 (Reuters) - China's economy is expected

to grow at a much slower pace of about seven percent over the

next decade, but its stock market still has the most attractive

upside among "BRIC" countries, according to Jim O'Neill,

Chairman of Goldman Sachs Asset Management.

"China is in the early stages of going from a long period

where it was all about the quantity of growth, into an era where

the focus is on the quality of growth," O'Neill told a news

conference in Singapore.

O'Neill, who coined the term "BRICs" to describe the

emerging countries of Brazil, Russia, India and China, said

markets have not fully factored in the next decade of slower

growth for the world's second-largest economy.

That, he said, explains the underperformance of China's

stock market.

After three decades of breakneck development that saw annual

growth average of 10 percent, China's government is trying to

steer growth lower to complete structural economic reforms.

"We're all used to the drug of 10 percent growth and those

days are behind us," said O'Neill.

As China makes its transition, O'Neill expects

consumer-related and healthcare companies to benefit, while

those that depend on heavy industry production and heavy

industry commodities were likely to lose out.

Investors are concerned over the timing of China's planned

slowdown, as it could be derailed by the global economic

downturn that has sapped overseas orders for exports from

China's vast factory sector.

China's CSI300 Index has fallen 2.2 percent so far

this year, While the MSCI Asia Pacific ex-Japan's

12.5 percent rise in the same period.

O'Neill said he expected China's A-shares to rise again over

the next year, and disagreed with the what he described as a

growing consensus that Chinese equities would never rally again.

However, he saw China's economy continuing to struggle in

the near term, and said the slowdown in growth may have spread

into the July-September period, which would mark a seventh

consecutive quarter of slowing growth.

"It's too soon to say a clear recovery is on the way. The

Chinese economy still seems to be softening and it's possible

that the economy may be weaker in Q3 than it was in Q2," O'Neill

said.

"There are not many signs yet of a big easing in financial

conditions, which usually is a good leading indicator of

momentum."

China is not alone in facing slower growth. Goldman Sachs

Asset Management expects all "BRIC" countries, except Brazil, to

see lower growth than they did in the last 10 years.

However, their collective share of the world economy will

still rise, and O'Neill noted that recent policy reforms that

some countries like India and Brazil have introduced are a good

sign.

India introduced sweeping reforms two weeks ago, such as

raising the price of heavily-subsidied diesel, aimed at shoring

up government finances and attracting foreign investment to

revive economic growth.

New material, graphene, may soon replace silicon for technology industry, experts say

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Norwegian researchers are the world's first to develop a method for producing semiconductors from graphene. This finding may revolutionise the technology industry.

The method involves growing semiconductor-nanowires on graphene. To achieve this, researchers "bomb" the graphene surface with gallium atoms and arsenic molecules, thereby creating a network of minute nanowires.

The result is a one-micrometre thick hybrid material which acts as a semiconductor. By comparison, the silicon semiconductors in use today are several hundred times thicker. The semiconductors' ability to conduct electricity may be affected by temperature, light or the addition of other atoms.

Fantastic potential

Graphene is the thinnest material known, and at the same time one of the strongest. It consists of a single layer of carbon atoms and is both pliable and transparent. The material conducts electricity and heat very effectively. And perhaps most importantly, it is very inexpensive to produce.

"Given that it's possible to make semiconductors out of graphene instead of silicon, we can make semiconductor components that are both cheaper and more effective than the ones currently on the market," explains Helge Weman of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). Dr Weman is behind the breakthrough discovery along with Professor Bj?rn-Ove Fimland.

"A material comprising a pliable base that is also transparent opens up a world of opportunities, one we have barely touched the surface of," says Dr Weman. "This may bring about a revolution in the production of solar cells and LED components. Windows in traditional houses could double as solar panels or a TV screen. Mobile phone screens could be wrapped around the wrist like a watch. In short, the potential is tremendous."

The researchers have received assistance in gaining patents and founding a company from NTNU Technology Transfer AS, a collaborative partner to the programme entitled Commercialising R&D Results (FORNY2020) at the Research Council of Norway.

However, the path to these findings started with basic research funded under the Research Council's Clean Energy for the Future Programme (RENERGI) and the now-concluded programme, Nanotechnology and New Materials (NANOMAT), which initiated the findings.

The researchers will now begin to create prototypes directed towards specific areas of application. They have been in contact with giants in the electronics industry such as Samsung and IBM. "There is tremendous interest in producing semiconductors out of graphene, so it shouldn't be difficult to find collaborative partners," Dr Weman adds.

The researchers are hoping to have the new semiconductor hybrid materials on the commercial market in roughly five years.

Tax burden shifts from salary workers to self-employed - Ekathimerini

Tax burden shifts from salary workers to self-employed

One of the proposals in the Finance Ministry?s overhaul of the tax system may signal relief for salaried workers and pensioners.

The government is said to be pondering reducing the tax brackets for the 4.8 million taxpayers in these broad categories from eight to four, with rates brought down to equal those for incomes from business activity, which, in turn, may rise to 30 or 35 percent.

While salaried workers and pensioners may see significant reductions come from such a measure, it would also entail the abolition of tax exemptions.

The purpose of the measure is to shift some of the burden from taxpayers who account for about 72 percent of taxes collected, or 8 billion euros per year, when entrepreneurs, farmers and the self-employed only pay 3 billion.

Video: Gut bacteria could cause diabetes

Thursday, September 27, 2012

The number of people suffering from type 2 diabetes world-wide has risen rapidly in recent years, and scientists estimate that just as many people could be suffering from the illness without realising it. New research now indicates that your gut bacteria can reveal whether you suffer from the disease.

"We have demonstrated that people with type 2 diabetes have a high level of pathogens in their intestines," says professor Jun Wang from the University of Copenhagen's Department of Biology and Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research.

Important intestinal bacteria

The 1.5 kilograms of bacteria that we each carry in our intestines have an enormous impact on our health and well being. The bacteria normally live in a sensitive equilibrium but if this equilibrium is disrupted our health could suffer. In the new study, scientists examined the intestinal bacteria of 345 people from China, of which 171 had type 2 diabetes. The team managed to identify clear biological indicators that someday could be used in methods that provide faster and earlier diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.

The research, which was recently published in the scientific journal Nature, also demonstrated that people with type 2 diabetes have a more hostile bacterial environment in their intestines, which can increase resistance to different medicines.

Similar studies carried out on sufferers of type 2 diabetes in Denmark also discovered a significant imbalance in the function of their intestinal bacteria and composition. Future Danish studies will examine whether intestinal bacteria is already abnormal in people that are deemed to be at risk of developing diabetes.

"We are going to transplant gut bacteria from people that suffer from type 2 diabetes into mice and examine whether the mice then develop diabetes," says another of the lead scientists behind the project, professor Oluf Borbye Pedersen from the University of Copenhagen and centre director at LuCamp, the Lundbeck Foundation Centre for Applied Medical Genomics in Personalised Disease Prediction, Prevention and Care.

International research team investigates gut bacteria

By working together, a team scientists from the University of Copenhagen and the Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI) was able to make to several breakthroughs in the field of 'metagenomics'.

Scientists working on the EU research project MetaHIT have uncovered more than 3.3 million genes from gut bacteria found in people from Spain and Denmark. These genes could play a key role in understanding and treating a range of serious illnesses. According to Professor Karsten Kristiansen from the University of Copenhagen's Department of Biology, the recent discovery is an important step in the comprehensive international research that is currently underway to investigate the interplay between intestinal bacteria and health.

"The European and Chinese working on the MetaHIT project were able to make important new discoveries about the relationship between intestinal bacteria and health. The new discovery indicates a possible connection between type 2 diabetes and the intestinal bacteria in Chinese people," Kristiansen says.

"It is important to point out that our discovery demonstrates a correlation. The big question now is whether the changes in gut bacteria can affect the development of type 2 diabetes or whether the changes simply reflect that the person is suffering from type 2 diabetes."

Egypt grapples with freedom of speech

In his speech at the U.N., the president will have the chance to distinguish his world vision from Mitt Romney's. Time Magazine Bobby Ghosh and former State Department Egypt Officer Joel Rubin discuss.

By Ayman Mohyeldin, NBC News

News Analysis

CAIRO ??An ultra-conservative Islamist cleric in Egypt faces charges of blasphemy after he?allegedly tore up and burned copies of the New Testament at a protest in front of the American Embassy in Cairo.

Ahmed Mohammed Mahmoud Abdallah, also known as Sheikh Abu Islam, is part owner of a private ultra-conservative Islamic TV station known as Al Uma and was participating in demonstrations against a U.S.-made movie denigrating the Prophet Muhammad that swept the Muslim world in the last month. (Click here for a video of the demonstration on YouTube).

Egypt?s General Prosecutor accused Abu Islam and his son, the channel's executive director, of insulting religion ??in this case Christianity.?

US embassies under siege; Family mourns former SEAL killed in Libya; Anti-Islamic film actors horrified at lip dubbing; Obama: Egypt neither ally nor enemy; Missile test creates cloud-like contrail; Kate Middleton takes center stage

The case is a rare example of the country?s often-criticized blasphemy laws being used against someone who allegedly insulted a religion that is not Islam. That trial is scheduled to begin September 30.

Is atheism blasphemy?
Another case that has received less attention illustrates the quandary Egyptians find themselves in amid the explosion of protests and expression following the revolution that deposed President Hosni Mubarak in 2011.

One Wednesday, a 24-year-old self-described atheist appeared in court to face charges that he was in contempt of religion by posting links to websites that promoted atheism.

Egypt issues arrest warrants for Terry Jones, Coptic Christians

Saber Eyead Zaki also allegedly posted the link to the controversial video that has triggered global protests known as the "Innocence of Muslims" on his Facebook page.

Egyptian human rights organizations have say that Zaki has been tortured and was being held at an undisclosed location. ?His house was searched without a proper warrant when no one was home, they contend.

Security forces faced violent protests in Egypt and Yemen spurred by angry mobs accusing the U.S. of insulting the prophet Mohammad. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

A video posted online shows the moment he was taken into custody?? a mob hurls insults at him and try to attack him as he is being whisked away by police.

As these simultaneous trials show, even sharing an idea is now enough to land you in jail in Egypt. This may seem a contradiction ??given that many Egyptians cite?the explosion of free speech, alongside the right to protest, as a major gain of the revolution.?

So the key question many Egyptians face is: Does more media and the right to protest mean freer speech?

The trials also are the latest examples that the government is taking a zero-tolerance approach to those who would question or criticize religion, let alone mock it and insult it.

Traditionally, this has been a one-way street, with most of those being tried cited for insulting Islam, including famed Egyptian icon and actor Adel Imam. Most insults to Christianity in Egypt have gone unpunished from references in media to derogatory and inflammatory comments made publicly.?

Zoubeir Souissi / Reuters

Tunisian protesters burn the U.S. flag during a demonstration outside the U.S. embassy in Tunis on Sept. 12, 2012. Tunisian police fired teargas and rubber bullets into the air on Wednesday to disperse a protest over a U.S.-made film depicting the Prophet Mohammad near the U.S. Embassy in the capital Tunis.

The two cases, along with others since the revolution, have really challenged Egyptians definition of free speech and whether the legal system in Egypt is capable of defending the right of people to express themselves freely especially when it comes to the issue of religion.?

Perhaps the biggest challenge to come is whether such limitations will be enshrined in the forthcoming constitution.

Many are already ringing the alarm bells that the new constitution may enshrine restrictions on free speech rather protecting it. If so, many Egyptians will undoubtedly feel that perhaps the one gain the revolution produced in the short run was merely an illusion.?

You can see the evidence on Pages like Zynga's Texas HoldEm Poker whose fan count dropped by 96,000 today after steady?after long steady growth. 'Teen Mom' Amber gets 'Behind Bars' special

Madison County Sherrif's Dept.

Amber Portwood, seen her in a Madison County Sherrif's Department booking photo, will soon appear in her own MTV special.

By Courtney Hazlett, TODAY

Fans of MTV's "Teen Mom" who recently tuned in to the season-four finale special noticed a significant absence: Amber Portwood was not in attendance. Instead of joining fellow cast mates Maci Bookout, Farrah Abraham and Catelynn Lowell in New York for an interview with host Dr. Drew Pinsky, Portwood was continuing to serve out her 5-year jail term inside the Rockville Correctional Facility in her home state of Indiana.

That doesn't mean we won't get to hear from Portwood -- MTV on Monday announced that it will premiere "Amber Behind Bars: An MTV Special" on Tuesday, Oct. 9. The special will consist of a half-hour interview with Pinsky and Portwood from the correctional facility where the two discuss what life has been like behind bars, her relationship with daughter Leah and ex-boyfriend Gary Shirley, and her hopes for the future. A press release from the network described it as an "honest look inside the intense ups and downs she's faced during this journey.

At the earlier reunion special, Pinsky read a statement from Portwood that read in part, "Right now I'm trying to figure out what I'm doing with my life. I guess I just got lost. I went to jail because I had an addiction to opiates. You live and you learn, and that's real. It's time for me to stop partying and realize that even though I'm 21, I'm not a normal 21-year-old -- I'm a mother. Which means I have to grow up quicker and start acting like a mother?. Right now my number one priority in life is dedicating my life to being sober, to being a sober person ? I want to show everybody that I can do it, I can start living a straight life and getting my family back in order."

Portwood, 22, voluntarily chose in May to serve out her five-year jail sentence instead of complying with the terms of her court-ordered drug program after violating her probation stemming from a December 2011 arrest for drug possession.

Do you think getting her side of the story out while she's serving out her prison sentence is a good idea for Amber, or should she just quietly complete her term, staying out of the public eye completely? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

Could I reserve the female slave?

Well, first off, are there any other possible roles? Like say some wannabe and failure supernatural hunter that, by a stroke of luck, comes upon those two. Or maybe another undead, friend of the family maybe, who wants to take the servants for his/her own. Etc.

If not, can I reserve the male servant?

The last one sounded quite intriguing and I myself had been thinking of various plot twists. I wanted to get the main ones filled out then get down to the other roles. But, which the friend could be male or female, you could take both characters. All up to you on what you prefer to do.

If Rock does not want the male sevant, may I have him?

Well then, I'll let TwiliX take the servant, and I'll go for the woman stealing (or man stealer, or both...) "friend". Well, I'll probably lose in the end since good guys always win (meh) but eh, I'll make sure to mess things up plenty before that...
