Hang Out (on Google+) With ISS Astronauts

What's it like to hang out with an astronaut? On February 22, we'll all find out. NASA just announced its first Google+ Hangout with the International Space Station, where astronauts orbiting 240 miles above Earth will answer questions from viewers down below.

Only 10 people can actually chat in a hangout at once, so make sure you send in your burning questions ahead of time via YouTube. NASA reps say that ?unique and original questions" will be chosen and broadcast during the event (so try to restrain yourself from becoming the millionth person to ask these poor guys how they go to the bathroom). Other questions will be selected during the hangout from fan submissions on Google+, Twitter, and Facebook. NASA astronauts Kevin Ford and Tom Marshburn will be broadcasting live from the ISS, along with Canadian Space Agency astronaut (and internet darling by way of a Reddit AMA) Chris Hadfield.

The Google+ event is just the latest in an ongoing effort by NASA to increase its social media presence. NASA's love affair with Twitter began when Victoria McGregor started tweeting from the perspective of the Phoenix lander in 2008, and her team's success has only increased with the Curiosity rover, which even spawned a parody twitter account.

Google is pretty enamored with space-related hangouts, too: A few months ago, the company made a ?documentary" (a commercial, if we're honest) about Fraser Cain's Virtual Star Parties, where astronomers around the world can broadcast views from their telescopes simultaneously.

The live hangout will be from 11 to noon EST, but it will also be available afterwards on YouTube. The deadline for pre-selected questions is Tuesday, February 12. Video clips need to be less than 30 seconds long and uploaded to YouTube with the tag #askAstro. Remember to introduce yourself and say where you're from before asking your question. To join the hangout, or to get updates, check out NASA's Google+ page.
