Wedding gun murder: Two released

Two suspects questioned over the murder of a man shot at a family wedding reception have been released without charge.

Robert Sheehan was struck in the head and upper body about five times in the gun attack at Bunratty Castle Hotel in Co Clare last weekend.

The victim - who would have turned 22 on Friday - died in hospital on Monday. His funeral was held on Thursday, when a priest appealed on behalf of his mother Majella for no-one to take revenge for the gangland-style killing.

Sheehan, from the Moyross area of Limerick, was shot at his brother's wedding when he went outside for a cigarette in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Two suspects, both in their 20s, were detained in Cork city several hours after the attack. A Garda spokesman confirmed both had been released and that a file will be prepared for the information of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Sheehan was jailed for two years in 2007 after he pleaded guilty over an arson attack in which two youngsters suffered horrific burns.

He was charged with endangering the lives of children Gavin and Millie Murray at Pineview Gardens, Moyross, in the September 2006 attack. The four-year-old boy and six-year-old girl were badly burnt when their mother's car was petrol-bombed in an unprovoked attack.

Two other men were found to have started the blaze while Sheehan acted as a look-out.

The sentencing judge accepted the men did not know the children were in the car at the time and Sheehan helped to pull Gavin from the blaze.

Sheehan also had convictions for motoring offences and possession of a knife.
